My wife, Eliza Pertz LCSW-R and I are offering a new eduction component to our practices beginning in 2020. We have 8 lecture topics that are presented in 2-hour segments. We can bring these lectures to your organization on a one time basis or we can present one per month over the course of 8 months.
LECTURE 1: Understanding the three part problem of addiction: Illness of the body (allergy) illness of the mind (obsession) illness of the Spirit. Once we explore addiction as a three part problem we will define a multipart solution.
LECTURE 2: Defining treatment levels of care (Inpatient, Intensive Outpatient, Outpatient, etc.) and helping to decide what the best level of care is for a patient at a particular time.
LECTURE 3: Clinical implications of working in the field as a recovering person (or non-recovering person.) How does your own addiction and recovery impact your philosophy? (abstinence, moderation, harm reduction.) What type of things trigger you? What type of things elicit a strong transference/counter transference response? In what ways do you take care of your own mental health and addiction recovery? What happens when a provider relapses?
Boundaries are important in all therapeutic settings (treatment, therapy, sober houses, sober coaching.) We will explore and discuss boundaries around taking patients to 12-step meetings, running into patients at meetings, socializing with former patients, working with former patients when they get hired by your agency, dual relationships, etc.
LECTURE 4: We will explore the role that family systems play in addiction. We will look at general traits of family systems that have addiction in them, will look at enabling, boundaries and tough love. We will discuss how to help the family system get well even if a patient decides not to.
LECTURE 5: We will compare philosophies of 12-step abstinence, moderation management, harm reduction and medication assisted therapy. We will compare and contrast, discuss issues related to treating patients within each model and discuss positive and negatives of each philosophy.
We will explore relapse through the lens of the question..Was this person in a place of recovery and lost it (relapse) or had they not yet gotten there (not a relapse since not in recovery yet.) The treatment goals vary based upon which situation the person presents with. We will also explore the spiritual, emotional or behavioral slip that precedes the chemical slip and how to prevent it.
LECTURE 6: We will teach how to assess a person holistically and truly get to know a person and his/her physical, spiritual and emotional state. We will then discuss how holistic treatment planning works to treat and heal each part of the person to facilitate a complete psychic, emotional and physical change. We address nutrition, exercise, medications, homeopathic remedies, herbal remedies and supplements, meditation, yoga, and other non invasive natural self healing approaches.
LECTURE 7: We will explore co-occurring disorders (Anxiety, Depression, Substance use disorders, Personality disorders, Eating disorders, Spectrum disorders, Attention disorders, Nicotine and Caffeine dependence) and discuss methods to treat them and what to expect the course and treatment to look like.
LECTURE 8: We will discuss what it’s like running a sober house. We will make recommendations based upon best practices that include sobriety as a prerequisite, active participation in community, household chores, community dinner, structured programming, coordinating collateral care, referring to treatment providers, staff selection, boundaries, a phase system, etc.
